American Oversight is a nonpartisan watchdog organization that uses public records requests, litigation and investigations to bring government records to light. Over time, its website had grown around content types rather than the issues visitors came looking for, making years of investigations and lawsuits hard to follow.
As its website partner since 2020, Back Pocket Media led a restructure of americanoversight.org around how people actually look for information. We mapped every existing content type into a simpler structure and built new navigation around Issues, the FOIA Library, About Us and Donate. Each issue page now pulls in related investigations, legal action, press releases and records automatically, and staff choose which issues lead on the landing page. A full redirect map and hands-on training let the team move years of content over without losing ground.
The result is a site where a reporter, researcher or supporter can start with an issue and follow the paper trail.
